Marshall Menagerie

1986 - 86"x86"

Over l50 years ago, Rachel Meyer made a Baltimore Album style quilt which included animals and flowers. My adaptation features animals, birds, and insects that remind our family of many different trips and experiences.

The kangaroo brings back our trip to Australia. The kinkajou was a pet that we had before we started our family. The seahorses remind us of the scuba diving trips we have taken to Bonaire. The children have all seen seahorses while diving there. The crabs make us think of our beachcombing walks and our love for the ocean. Squirrels have practically taken over our yard here in St. Louis, and I'll never forget our youngest son trying to catch frogs one summer. Two blocks contain birds patterned after mosaics in St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. The other various birds represent our love of birds and our birdfeeder near the window next to our breakfast table. And believe it or not, insects hold a fascination for me, too.
